GrandBackup

Task Properties: Destination

You can choose between two destination types: Local/LAN and FTP location.

Backup to Local/LAN

Press Browse... to select the destination folder or type in the full destination path to the field next to the button.

Tip:
You can use Folder Expansion Variables in the Destination Folder field to set up an incremental backup.

Examples:

A folder on your computer may be called

c:\Backup of my Documents

or a folder on another computer in a network may be called

\\BackupServer\Monthly Backup

or, using variables,

\\BackupServer\Monthly Backup %date%

Backup to FTP location

GrandBackup performs operations with FTP servers and files on them just as if those files were located on local disks.

The FTP-location settings contain a mandatory host name field, optional fields for entering a login name and password, and a set of connection options.

Normally, the FTP-location configuration dialog looks like this:

The host record contains the address of an FTP server and any additional information that is needed to connect - user name, password and so on.

The fields that can be edited are described below.

FTP address (URL)

The URL may contain: user name, user password, connection port and backup folder.
The URL must contain: the address of the server to connect to.
URL parts have lower priority than dialog fields.

The program recognizes the following URL syntax:

[ftp://][user[:password]@]hostname[:port][/folder]

The URL parts in square brackets are optional. The fields have the following meaning:

ftp://

- standard URL prefix for an FTP resource

user

- user name to login to the server

password

- user password

hostname

- name or IP-address of the host to connect to

port

- the port on which the FTP server is listening

folder

- directory to change to after the program connects to the server

The only required field is the "hostname" field. If the program cannot extract the hostname from the URL, the creation or editing of the host data will fail.

Remember:

  • fields from the FTP-server record always take precedence over parts of the URL;
  • if you do not want other users of the computer to see the passwords to the FTP servers you work with, do not specify them as parts of the URL. Enter them separately in the appropriate fields.

The User and Password fields can contain any characters. The program uses the separators (@ and :) in the URL to figure out the name and password. Thus there is no way, for example, to specify a password containing the ":" character as part of the URL. To solve this problem, enter the password in the password field separately.

Port

The port on which the FTP server is listening. The default is 21.

Folder

The directory to change to after the program connects to the server.

Tip:
You can use Folder Expansion Variables in the Folder field to set up incremental backups.

User name sent to the server during authorization.

When you first create a host record, you can specify just the URL. If you leave the Login field blank, the program automatically fills it with the information from the URL if you subsequently change it.

The Login field has priority over the URL part with the user name, so changes in the URL username part will not take effect unless the Login field is blank! In other words, the program always uses the contents of the Login field if it is not empty.

Password

User password sent to the server during authorization.
This field abides by the same rules as the Login field.

Passive mode

This turns on "passive" FTP-client mode. The client mode determines how data connections are established. In passive mode the client program asks the server to connect with it, while in normal mode the program initiates the connection itself. Passive mode can fail on some networks using firewalls or NAT.

Advanced FTP Settings

Press "Advanced FTP Settings..." to adjust additional FTP options such as proxy server address, reconnection retry count and timeout settings.

Proxy

Use proxy - Check this if you will access the FTP resource via a proxy server

Address - Name or IP-address of the proxy server

Port - Connecting port of the proxy server, 21 by default

Authorize on proxy - Check this if the proxy server requires authentication

Login - Type in the login name here

Password - Type in the password

Options

Number of FTP reconnect retries - Edit or adjust how many times GrandBackup will attempt to access the FTP resource before a connection failure is reported

Pause before each retry (s) - Edit or adjust the interval in seconds between the connection attempts

Time out (s) - Edit or adjust the time in seconds to wait for connection to be established
